the challenge

Camden City School District wanted to improve access to high quality school options by building a Unified Enrollment System that would overcome logistical, financial, and communications hurdles. Over the course of a year, Kitamba collaborated with district, charter, and other education sector partners to build and implement the system, which included: developing policy; implementing technology systems to inform parents of their options and to manage the application and lottery process; launching a comprehensive communications campaign to get the word out; completing data analytics, and; developing solutions for the long-term sustainability of the system.

The Impact

As of March 2016, 3,800 students (out of 15,000 total students in Camden) applied to school through the Unified Enrollment System and 99% of all students applying in the main round were matched to one of their top 3 choices.

Civic Builders Charter Financing 

The Challenge

Civic Builders, a non-profit charter school facilities group, partnered with philanthropic foundations seeking a national solution to address charter facilities financing challenges. Kitamba collaborated with Civic Builders to launch a new initiative to address these issues. Over the course of a year and a half, Kitamba conducted market research, gained input from charter operators and support organizations, developed a dynamic financial model to test investment hypotheses, and supported the creation of a business plan for the new initiative.

The impact

As a result of the collaboration between Kitamba and Civic Builders, The Walton Family Foundation announced a $250 million investment to create the Building Equity Initiative, a new organization incubated by Civic Builders with the goal of adding 250,000 high-quality charter seats nationally over the next 10 years.

THE CHALLENGE

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation wanted to help state education organizations (SEOs) collect and make better use of educators and administrator surveys that would gather feedback and perspectives from practitioners across the state. Kitamba created a survey toolkit to guide state education organizations in the use of data. Over the course of six months, Kitamba worked with state education organizations to understand their on-the-ground challenges. State partners wanted a community of practice to share ideas, tools, and lessons, so Kitamba facilitated a series of focused online and in-person events. Kitamba also collaborated with other organizations supporting state partners to create a coordinated, coherent , one-stop-shop toolkit . Finally, Kitamba designed a user-friendly website to make the toolkit easily accessible for state partners.

"The exchange was a great chance for the states to speak about where in the survey process they each are and what was helpful or not helpful in their process this year. It was also interesting to see joint problems and how different groups have sought to address those.”  

93% of respondents said the Kitamba-facilitated workshop was extremely or very useful in a post-meeting survey.
